A working K9, or working dog, is a dog trained to perform specific tasks beyond being a pet. They commonly work in these fields:
The American Kennel Club (AKC) categorizes dog breeds into groups. The Working Group includes breeds that were developed to assist humans in various tasks. While many breeds can be trained as working dogs, some are known for their suitability for certain roles, such as German Shepherds, Belgian Malinois, Labrador Retrievers, and Bloodhounds.
Dr. Dycus has a deep understanding of the specific functions of working dogs and the injuries they experience. That’s why he’s sought out by local, national, and federal agencies throughout the eastern United States. He’s also on the faculty of the UPenn Working Dog Practitioner Program where he teaches and trains veterinarians across the country on appropriate examination, diagnosis and treatment of working K9s.
